Still, on the whole, Norse units are better.
Note that they have the same WP as the top tier Frisian infantry, despite being a tier below (VC Balance Mod fixes this by lowering their proficiencies, but letting them upgrade). However, they are pricey, as is all cavalry, meaning they are ideal for quick recruiting when you need to swell your ranks, but not to hold long term. They have around 200 WP, and dismounted they can hold their own against tier 3 spearmen of other factions. Most significantly because their tier 2 horsemen are clearly overpowered for their placement, and can be recruited directly from villages. As mixed factions go, they are a bit more interesting. Meanwhile, Angle swordsmen are pretty good, but Norse are better, and if playing unmodded VC, Angle Tier 5 swordsmen are horrible for their tier, because they have the wrong sword selection (VC Balance Mod fixes that, and they once again become good). Besides, if you decide to recruit Christians for the best spearmen, might as well go Saxon. Their top tier spearmen are better than Norse, but tier 4 Norse spearmen are better than Angles because of their possible mail armor, and that performance difference is probably more critical. Truthfully, Angles add little to the Norse troop tree for the player. Northymbria and Frisia are mixed factions, their lords recruit both Norse and local troops (in VC Balance Mod, Frisian lords also recruit Frankish cavalry, while Northymbria recruits moderate numbers of the new 2 handed Dane Axe troops).Ī Northumbrian player will be recruiting Norse from towns and castles, and mostly (random chance) Angles from villages, within the home territory they start with. 2 Frisian ladies have multiple male relatives, because all Frisian lords are a father and his two sons (unmodded VC was missing their relationships) Thorunn Ketillsdottir in Norway has a father and 2 brothers (unmodded VC is missing her brother relationship with a Laithland lord) More importantly, VC Balance Mod adds the missing family relations, and removes Thorunn’s marriage, meaning 2 additional great pagan marriageable families arise: If VC Balance Mod, then marriage is unrestricted by faction (but still restricted by religion), so you can pursue any pagan girl. Laithland has a girl with a family of 2 brothers and 1 father, so a pretty big family for VC purposes. If Unmodded Viking Conquest, then you can only marry a girl from your faction, meaning picking a faction works out to picking a wife. Actually they might be one of the most interesting choices, they represent Norse holdings in Ireland and some islands. Originally posted by add Laithland to the list.
